Il Pizzaiolo del Presidente, Centro Storico, Naples
Yet another pizzeria in Naples’s Centro Storico district, Pizzeria del Presidente would be a heavily revered restaurant anywhere else in the world but on this particular stretch of road it is simply one of many places serving incredible pizza at a ridiculously low price.
At the youthful age of 7, Ernesto Cacialli had the honour of preparing a margherita pizza for former President Bill Clinton when he visited Naples in 1994. Following this apparently life changing experience, he decided to call his very own restaurant Il Pizzaiolo del Presidente to mark the occasion.
Easily one of the best Pizzerie in Napoli, del Presidente’s pizzas are unbelievably good but not great. Lacking the depth of flavour of Di Matteo a few doors down, somehow the tomato sauce is not quite as rich, and the base is a little bit too chewy, but that is just me being extremely critical. The pizza is still probably one of the best I’ve ever eaten and the fritti (fried foods) are the simply the best, with special mention going to the frittatine, which are arguably better than the pizza itself.
The nearest of all the main pizzerie to the Duomo and the central station, del Presidente is hugely popular and despite very little space upstairs, a result of the monstrous wood-fire oven, there is plenty of room downstairs where the atmosphere is always lively. The walls are covered in photos of friends and famous visitors and there are masses of awards on display too. It’s no big surprise either, with pizzas of this quality and at this price, €3-4 it deserves them all.
