Tayyabs, Whitechapel, London
If you want to get table at Tayyabs then join the back of the queue. This East End eatery is one of the most popular restaurants in London and it’s no surprise; the food is truly amazing and the price is even better.
In the backstreets of Whitechapel, not far from the busy and bustling Brick Lane, Tayyabs is a traditional Pakistani/Punjabi restaurant like no other. You’ll know when you’ve found it by the huge crowds of Londoners gathered outside waiting for a table. Don’t bother booking, you’ll still have to wait.
Once you’re in, the service is brisk and brash but that’s all part of the Tayyabs experience. From the starter menu the only thing you really need to concern yourself with is the lamb chops. Marinated in rich spices and bursting with intense flavours, the recipe is a closely guarded secret and is the main reason hundreds of people flock here each day. Arriving at your table sizzling on a hot plate the size, quality and taste of the chops can vary widely, but even on a bad day I’ve yet to eat something that tastes as good.
The Punjabi meat curries are full-bodied, the dhals wholesome and the vegetable dishes sweet and aromatic (the okra and baby aubergine are particularly tasty).
Alcohol is not sold on the premises, but this isn’t a problem as you can bring your own for no extra charge. If you do feel like getting something to drink from the menu though, you can’t go far wrong with one of the homemade lassis, the mango is particularity good.
Once you’ve finished, there’s a huge selection of traditional Pakistani confectionery to choose from if you have a particularly sweet tooth, otherwise try one of the refreshing Kulfi, a popular Indian frozen dessert made from milk.
Although prices have started to rise in recent year’s, Tayyabs still offers exceptional value. For those with a big appetite, a starter, bread, curry, rice and vegetable dish shouldn’t cost more than £15, while if you’re a bit more restrained £10 should be all that you need.
